First came surgeries, then lasers, and after came Botox. Now there’s Ultherapy – a face and neck treatment that creates a brand new category in aesthetics-non-invasive tissue lifting.
For the first time ever, Ultherapy enables practitioners to direct sound waves not only into the skin but deep under the skin to the same tissue addressed in surgery. This gently heats the tissue to lift and tighten loose skin without cutting or disrupting the surface of the skin. Besides the visible effects of lifting and tightening, there is also an invisible result from Ultherapy with the creation of new collagen, which helps the skin maintain its youthfulness.
Ultherapy lifts, tones, and tightens loose skin to counteract the effects of time and gravity. One of the first effects of gravity is that the brows descend, and the eyes start to appear smaller. Ultherapy will lift the brow, which in turn reduces the excess skin on the lids, opens up the eyes and gives a more refreshed appearance.
The beauty of Ultherapy is that it’s a 30 to 60-minute procedure that uses the body’s own subtle healing response to gently, gradually and reliably restore memory to the skin and its underlying tissue. Ultherapy requires no special recuperation or preparation and generally only takes one treatment to get a meaningful response. Patients enjoy some initial effect immediately following the procedure, but the ultimate lifting will take 2 – 3 months, as tired collagen is rejuvenated and supplemented with new, stronger collagen.
There isn’t a replacement for the dramatic effects of surgery, but Ultherapy offers a natural, ‘no downtime’ approach to noticeably improving lax skin. There are many factors to look at when achieving a good treatment outcome with Ultherapy.
Q. How does Ultherapy work?
A. Low level heat in the form of ultrasound waves is directed deep under the skin to target the same layer of fibro-muscular (SMAS) tissue addressed in traditional cosmetic surgery. The energy from the ultrasound waves actually pulls your facial muscles upward, which is exactly what a plastic surgeon would do during a facelift. The ultrasound waves are so focused and precise that we can use them to contour the fatty layer of tissue during the treatment, allowing us to sculpt your face while we lift the muscles. The gentle heating of the tissue also triggers the body’s natural healing response, causing an increase in the production of collagen. The influx in collagen growth gradually restores memory to the skin and its underlying tissue for noticeably firmer skin and a decrease in the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. The overall result is beautifully and naturally lifted and tightened skin that makes you look less tired and more youthful.
Q. How does Ultherapy compare to other non-invasive face lifting treatments?
A. Ultherapy is a “3 in 1″ treatment that not only lifts, but also sculpts and fills in fine lines and wrinkles — making it far more effective in producing results than any other noninvasive face lifting treatment available. Ultherapy is the only FDA-approved noninvasive cosmetic treatment that uses ultrasound waves to specifically target and lift the deep, foundational layer of fibro-muscular tissue that doctors address in surgery. Ultrasound technology also enables us to see the layers of tissue we are treating so that we can delivery the energy precisely to where it will be most effective. The highly focused precision of Ultherapy also allows for sculpting and contouring of the fatty facial tissues.
Q. How does Ultherapy compare to a traditional facelift?
A. Similar to a surgical facelift, Ultherapy goes beyond simply lifting the skin and actually lifts the facial muscles. Traditional facelifts, however, are far more painful, pose exponentially higher risks and require a significant amount of downtime for recuperation. Facelifts can also result in a jarring distortion of your original facial features, where as Ultherapy offers gradual and natural-looking improvements.
Q. What is collagen?
A. Collagen is a natural protein that gives skin a firm and toned appearance. As we age, our collagen loses strength resulting in a sagging of the skin. Ultherapy acts as a catalyst in the process of strengthening existing collagen and producing new collagen to restore your skin’s youthful appearance. Many facial treatments stimulate collagen growth, but only Ultherapy increases and strengthens collagen in addition to lifting the muscles and sculpting the fatty tissue in your face.
Q. When will I see results?
A. You may see very minor improvements immediately following treatment, but really noticeable results won’t surface until at least 90 days later. The ultimate results generally peak at six months, but you can still expect to see minor improvements up to a full year after treatment. A nice aspect of this gradual reveal is that your appearance is not dramatically altered overnight, so friends and family notice that you’re looking younger without thinking you’ve “had work done.” Most people only require one session to achieve their desired results.
Q. How long do results last?
A. Your skin will continue to produce fresh, young collagen for up to a full year after treatment. After that year, the rate of collagen production will plateau. We recommend speaking to your FACE Skin Management Expert™ about keeping your collagen growth up with a home care system or professional treatments that meet your needs.
Q. Who is a candidate for Ultherapy?
A. Ultherapy is a great option for people of any gender, any skin type and any age (though typically over 30) looking to improve the appearance of maturing skin on the face and neck without the pain and downtime of traditional surgery.
Q. How long does a session take?
A. The duration of an Ultherapy session is dependent on what areas of the face we are treating, but we do tell our clients to plan on spending a few hours with us the day of treatment. Typically, treatment time is about 30 minutes for the upper face and about 60 minutes for the lower face. If we’re treating your entire face, the session could last up to two hours. Our treatments do tend to run longer than other facilities due to the extra time we spend with you before and after treatment to make sure you are comfortable with our unique numbing system and because we administer an average of 150 more pulses per session than other facilities for optimal results.
Q. Does it hurt?
A. Some discomfort can be felt while the heat is being applied, more so in the boney areas of your face where there is less fatty tissue. We do everything to minimize any unpleasant sensations with our revolutionary numbing process. Unlike other Ultherapy facilities that prescribe narcotic painkillers and topical numbing ointments that are often ineffective and can make you feel ill, we have engineered a numbing system that borders the comfort level of local anesthesia. Any discomfort is temporary, and our clients usually leave feeling completely comfortable.

Q. Is it safe?
A. Ultrasound technology has been safely used in the medical field for over 50 years, and multiple clinical trials demonstrate that the application of this technology in the Ultherapy system is completely safe. Ultherapy is approved by the FDA.
Q. Are there side effects?
A. A small percentage of clients experience mild and temporary side effects, which can be some redness for up to an hour following treatment. You might also feel a slight swelling, tingling or tenderness to the touch at the target area that can last up to a few weeks. Some clients also notice very tiny heat-induced welts that look like small blemishes, and these only stick around for a few days if they occur at all. No studies have ever reported long-term negative effects from Ultherapy.
Q. How much does it cost?
A. Treatment sessions range between $1,500 and $3,500, and the cost is dependent on how many areas of your face we treat. During your pre-treatment consultation, we will pinpoint the cost of your session so there are no surprises.
