Botox® VS Dysport®: What is the Difference?

While your facial expressions help you communicate emotions, they can also cause lines and wrinkles. Botox® and Dysport® relax these lines so that you look younger and more refreshed. While these products work the same way, they have some differences that make one better than the other depending on the use.

What are Botox® and Dysport®?

Both products are muscle relaxers that use botulinum toxin A to quiet muscle activity. While they have a very similar formula, each has a different protein attached. This makes Dysport® a slightly smaller molecule than Botox®. Both treat lines and wrinkles caused by facial muscles. Botox® was the first FDA-approved botulinum product. It is the only one approved for medical uses such as muscle spasms and hyperhidrosis.

How Do Botox® and Dysport® Work?

Despite their slightly different properties, these products work the same way on a molecular level. When injected into the facial muscles, they target the nerves that control them. They stop the nerve from sending signals. As a result, the muscle stops contracting, letting your lines and wrinkles become smooth. The effect is harmless, and your nerve and muscle return to normal as soon as the product wears off. Both products do this job equally well

Botox® VS Dysport®: What is the Difference?

If they work the same way, what makes Botox® and Dysport® different?

Dysport®’s smaller size may allow it to start working faster. Dysport® results become visible within a few days. Botox® results usually take seven to ten days to develop. Dysport® also diffuses more than Botox® from the point of injection. This means you may need less product, and your results will look smooth and natural.

Some people find that the muscle relaxer they have used has become less effective over time. If this happens with Botox® or Dysport®, switching to another may restore effectiveness. Some report that Dysport® can last a bit longer than Botox®, but this depends on the individual.

Is There Any Downtime With Botox® or Dysport®?

Your treatment will only take a few minutes, and you can return to normal activities afterward. After Botox® or Dysport®, you may notice red spots, bruising, or soreness in the injection area. These fade within a day or two. There is no difference in the downtime between the two products.

Am I a Good Candidate for Botox® or Dysport®?

If you make a good candidate for Botox®, you are probably a good candidate for Dysport®. Ideal candidates want to treat expression lines and wrinkles such as frown lines. You may not be a good candidate if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have certain neuromuscular conditions.
