Q: What is the miraDry® procedure?
A: miraDry® is a quick non-invasive procedure that is the only FDA-cleared treatment for permanent reduction of underarm sweat, odor, and hair. The handpiece from the miraDry® System, when placed on the underarm, delivers precisely controlled energy to the region where the sweat glands reside and eliminate sweat glands non-invasively. The sweat glands don’t grow back once eliminated, resulting in a dramatic and lasting reduction of underarm sweat, odor, and even hair.
Q: Do I need my underarm sweat glands?
A: Your body contains over 4 million sweat glands, with only about 2% located in the underarms. Eliminating this 2% will not affect the body’s ability to cool itself.
Q: What parts of my body can the miraDry® System treat?
A: The miraDry® System is indicated for use of treatment of excessive underarm sweat (primary axillary hyperhidrosis) in adults 18 and over. It cannot be used to treat excessive sweating elsewhere on the body, including the hands and feet.
Q: What is the difference between the new miraDry® 4 and older versions?
A: The new miraDry 4 was launched the first quarter of 2018. The original and second generation MiraDry® are obsolete. The 4th generation is better than the third in many ways including better and more efficient energy delivery, better cooling, procedural time is drastically less, and the results are even better!
Q: Will all my hair be removed with miraDry®?
A: There is a reduction in under arm hair as some hairs reside in the apocrine glands which are destroyed during treatment. By no means is there an elimination of all hair, more so a thinning of the hair. It is not blotchy with a reduction in hair, meaning we have not had any patients, including men, complain about under arm hair being thinned out.
Q: What results can I expect with miraDry®?
A: Most people report a dramatic reduction of their sweat – in a recent clinical study, the average sweat reduction was 86%. You should see a reduction in sweat immediately after treatment. As with any medical procedure, results will vary by person.
Q: How long will the results with miraDry® last?
A: The results are lasting because the sweat glands do not come back or regenerate after they have been eliminated. The miraDry® procedure uses a safe, non-invasive technology that is FDA cleared to eliminate sweat glands in the underarm.
Q: What is the miraDry® procedure like?
A: The procedure involves no surgical incisions or cuts. The technician customizes treatment for each underarm area with multiple placements of the miraDry® handpiece. Local numbing is administered to the underarms prior to the procedure to maintain comfort.
Q: How many appointments of miraDry® do I need?
A: Just one appointment is needed for regular underarm swear, odor, and hair.
If you have hyperhidrosis, then two appointments are needed and would be spaced three months apart.
Q: How long does the miraDry® procedure take?
A: From the start, to finish the treatment takes less than 60 minutes.
Q: What are the side effects or downtime to miraDry®?
A: There is minimal to no downtime following the procedure. You may use mild over-the-counter pain medication and ice packs for a few days. You should be able to return to normal activities or work right after the procedure, and you can typically resume exercise within several days. Some immediate redness and possible bruising can last a few days. Some soreness, discomfort, and tenderness last typically 2-3 weeks. Swelling is typically 1-8 weeks, bumps or lumpiness is 4-6 weeks, and altered sensation in the area can last 1-12 weeks.
